Locally-Owned Jewelry Store Closing After 30 Years in Business;
Big Sale Starts Tuesday, Nov. 12

Woodbridge, Va. – Nov. 11, 2019

– For Jenny Caro, closing the jewelry store she and her husband John own is bittersweet. “We’ve been very involved in the community, providing friendly, honest service for our customers, giving back to charitable causes over the years,” Caro said. “We’ve always been there for them.”
But after 30 years in business, the 60-something couple felt the time was right to close Jewelry By Designs to explore other interests.

Large sale in the works

Shoppers looking for great deals on jewelry should mark Tuesday, Nov. 12 on their calendars. That’s when Jewelry By Designs will start a huge going-out-of-business sale. Expect to find one-of-a-kind deals on high-quality jewelry, including engagement rings, wedding bands and gemstone jewelry.
Some of the many brand names the store carries include Hearts on Fire, Art Carved, Gabriel, Le Vian, Effy, Noam Carver, Crown Ring, and Martin Flyer.
The store offers a wide range of styles and prices to serve its customers, many of whom are military and government workers who live in Woodbridge, a popular suburb for D.C. commuters.
“We carry fine jewelry, diamonds, and engagement rings that are priced to reflect what our customers have wanted to buy over the years,” Caro said. “You will find beautiful fine jewelry at an affordable, fair price.”

Getting started in the business

John Caro, who’s from California, began his jewelry career selling silver rings on the streets of Berkeley. He attended Gem City College to hone his skills and eventually moved to Northern Virginia. He and Jenny, who got a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a major in jewelry at Virginia Commonwealth University, met at a workshop on photographing jewelry in Alexandria, Va., in 1980.
After getting married, the couple decided to open a small, 600-square-foot jewelry store in 1989 in Lorton, about five miles north of Woodbridge. They learned of a new shopping center in Woodbridge that seemed to be a better location for their business and moved there nine years later.
It turned out to be a great move: Business was doing so well that they’ve expanded the store’s space five times since moving there. The 4,000-square-foot store is double the size of the original store they opened on the Prince William Parkway.
“Our store is considered in the top 5 percent of jewelry stores in the country,” Caro said. That's pretty cool.”
Jenny Caro enjoys working with customers. “My focus is on the customer,” Caro said. “My husband’s an award-winning designer.”
In 2014, he came in third place in the American Gem Trade Association’s Spectrum Awards for his “Sparkling Pagoda” piece, which recreated a detailed world of Japanese tranquility in quartz, mother of pearl, and moonstones.

Missing their customers

Jenny Caro said they’ve become close to their customers, some of whom have shopped with them for decades, bringing in the next generation to buy engagement rings.
“People will be upset that we’re closing,” Caro said.
That seems likely, judging from the overwhelmingly positive feedback the store has received on its Facebook page.
“I feel I can trust my needs to Jenny, John, Lynn and the rest of the staff at (Jewelry By Designs) and don't hesitate at all to recommend them to my family and friends for their jewelry needs,” one customer wrote.
“The care and attention to detail were remarkable,” another customer wrote. “I was guided at every step of the ring design process.”
Wrote another: “We were helped by the owner Mrs. Jenny (biggest sweetheart); she helped me find my perfect ring at the perfect price.”

Giving back

She and her husband have also remained dedicated to supporting the community over the years through charitable giving. Favorite causes include helping CASA, an organization that provides court-appointed advocates for children in need. They also contribute to the Prince William Humane Society, ACTS, Streetlight Ministries and The House, Inc.
“We’ve been involved in the community responding to various needs,” Caro said. She estimates the couple has given to more than 100 different organizations.
Reflecting on 30 years in the jewelry business, Caro expressed gratitude for the community support they’ve received.
“We’re just grateful we could play a positive role in the lives of so many people,” she said.
